This is a reproduction of prominent San Antonio bass player Larry Patton’s Telecaster bass featuring a pickup designed by another prominent San Antonio player and builder, Jerry Blanton.
According to Larry, he had Jerry install the pickup and “Badass” bridge in 1972 when he was playing large Texas honky tonks with Johnny Bush. He was playing through a single 15” Alamo amp and needed the extra power that the Blanton pickup can deliver.
Over the years his bass has been defretted (made fretless) and refretted several times and had additional finish work done about 15 years ago by Victor Hill in Cookeville, Tenn.
This projects started out with a vintage telecaster that had already been stripped and routed for a different pickup. One of my customers recognized it as an opportunity to make a copy of Patton’s bass.
I’d like to thank Larry Patton and Jerry Blanton for letting me recreate their designs.
